New Model Y is here: Everything you need to know
The 2025 Tesla Model Y is finally here. Tesla’s revamped version of its highly successful SUV Model Y. It introduces several notable upgrades compared to the older version, enhancing performance, comfort, and design. Here's a breakdown of the key differences:
Performance and Efficiency
- Improved Aerodynamics: The new Model Y has a drag coefficient of 0.22, 4% lower than the older model, improving efficiency and stability[1][3].
- Range: The Long Range AWD variant now offers 526km or 320 miles (up from 501km or 310 miles), thanks to better aerodynamics and drivetrain efficiency [1][4]. Tesla says this number may be understated and will be revised to be even higher than first announced.
- Top Speed: Reduced from 201 kph or 155 mph to 217km or 125 mph for more efficient tires[1].
Comfort and Ride Quality
- Noise Reduction: The cabin is up to 20% quieter due to improved acoustic glass and seals[1][5]. The entire door frame has carpeted seals. The door jam now locks in place like high end German vehicles.
- Suspension: Second-generation suspension reduces vibrations by 51%, enhancing ride comfort[1][5].
- Seats: Heated and ventilated front seats, plus power-folding rear seats for added convenience[5]. The electronically controlled folding seats are the fastest and quietest in the industry. Tesla developed the motor in-house.
Interior Enhancements
- Left turning rear stalk stays but right gear shift is eliminated for touch screen swipe. The car will auto shift and predict which gear you would want but you can shift up for goats and down for back.
- Rear Touchscreen: An 8-inch screen for rear passengers adds climate and entertainment controls[1][8].
- Materials: Upgraded soft-touch materials, wrap-around ambient lighting, and refined dashboard design improve cabin aesthetics[3][8].
- USB-C Ports: Three 65W chargers for fast device charging[1].
- Auto circulating air vents: air vents will point the air left and right to circulate the air better. This feature can be turned off as well.
Exterior Updates
- Lighting: A new front lightbar and reflective rear lightbar modernize the design while improving visibility[2][3].
- Dimensions: Slightly longer by 1.6 inches with updated wheel designs for better aerodynamics[1][3].
- Colours: New Glacier Blue paint option. Head designer gave insight that they wanted to combine two very popular colours: blue and silver.
- No front logos: no longer feature a Tesla logo at the front but instead “Tesla” written in the rear light bar. This is however different in China where a logo is required at the front of the vehicle.
- Wheels: New 19 inch Storm Wheels with a new wheel cover design that is removable and enhances range. Also, a new 20 inch Spiral Storm Aluminum Wheels.
- Repair-ability : Tesla has extended the rear lip and split the top and bottom half of its trunk area so that repairs are cheaper and easier than the outgoing model Y.
Technology
- Cameras: Nine cameras, including a new front bumper camera with a debris-cleaning sprayer, enhance Autopilot and Full Self-Driving systems[2]. The front camera is mostly for user parking or enhanced visibility. Every camera has a new housing design to allow for self-cleaning while driving. Tesla designer describe it as the camera lens will keep clean longer and clean themselves based on aerodynamics of the car.
- Trunk Features: Hands-free power operation and a drain plug in the front trunk for easier cleaning[1][5]. The front seats actually move forward so the rear seats fold down smoothly without hitting the front seats. And, you can now have a drink bar in your frunk.
- The charging architecture still uses the old technology so no fast charging available. However, Tesla is upgrading all their supercharging network to offer even faster charging and improve reliability. It’s already, hands down the best for road tripping.
- Handsfree truck: It senses your phone proximity and automatically opens the front or rear trunk if you stand in-front of it for a period of time.
- Internet: Upgraded 5G modems to allow even faster speeds on the road.
- Tesla Sound System: with reduced cabin noise the audio system is on par with the best in the industry can offer with 13-speaker system powered by 2 amps and breaks down into: 3 tweeters, 7 midrange, and 2 subwoofers. This is however downgraded on the cheaper rear wheel models and is only offered on all wheel drive and performance models.
The refreshed Model Y combines better efficiency, luxury features, and cutting-edge technology, making it a significant upgrade over its predecessor. Test drive or check it out at your local Tesla store.
