Tesla Winter Protection Review

Winter is coming. We’re all looking for some good mats to cover our cars before the weather gets here. Tesla has yet to release the Model Y floor mats on Tesla Shop. So if you’re picking up a new car, you probably want some protection as soon as possible. Canada gets pretty cold fast.

WINTER FLOOR MATS

TESMANIAN has some great custom Tesla floor mats. They are non-branded (similar to Tesla branded mats). They are rugged plastic material that is soft to the touch. They have the FRUNK mats, TRUNK mats, INTERIOR floor mats, and STORAGE organizers. Here are photos of my setup below.

So far, the fit and finish has been great. The only downside would be shipping ($60 CAD) + duties / taxes ($22 CAD) on top of the floor mats. The full set is going for 19% off ($399 CAD or $286 USD).

SUPER LINER also has a very similar Floor Mat style can be ordered on Amazon (approx. $338 CAD) for the full set with free shipping. Customized for Tesla Model Y, rubber and matte finish.

WEATHER TECH is another option but only has front and rear seat coverage for ~$372 CAD + duties & tax. The material is more rugged but will have their logo on every mat, which not everyone will like. The SUPER LINER above is cheaper and without a logo.

Ceramic Coating

Ceramic coating is a chemical solution applied to the exterior of cars to create a layer of protection against rusting and external paint damage. It has become a low cost alternative to waxing.

Nano Bond Ceramic Coating Protects paint from scratches, chips, dust, acid rain, paint transfer, rust, fading, and water streaks. Nano Bond Ceramic Coating is also super hydrophobic and beads water and makes it run off with ease!

Specifications:

Hardness: 9H hardness
Durability: 2-3 years
Thickness: 30um
Gloss: Excellent high gloss effect
Heat Resistance: Up to 760 degrees
Bottle size: 30ML As displayed in picture.

How to apply Nano Bond ceramic coating.

1. Wrap the cloth over coating sponge.

2. Apply a line of coating down the length of the sponge.

3. Spread the liquid on the car evenly

4. After 1-2 mins use a towel to wipe and polish.

WINTER TIRES

Tesla just added its winter tire collection on its Tesla Shop. Tesla recommends 19” wheels for it’s Model Y.

TIRE SPEC

255/45 R19 XL

Load Rating = >104 + XL (800kg or 1760lbs+)

Outer Diameter = 28”

Other options with 19”:

  • PIRELLI P-ZERO

  • NOKIAN SNOWPROOF P Tires are great options as well but you will need to check their site to find a local dealer.

  • MICHELIN X-ICE SNOW - a bit on the softer side but Made in Canada

  • New MICHELIN X-ICE SNOW 255/45-19 104 XL - Does not come out until 2021

  • MICHELIN PILOT ALPIN PA4

  • CONTENTIAL VIKING CONTACT 7

  • KUHMO WINTERCRAFT WP72

  • NEXEN WINGUARD SPORT 2

  • TSPORTLINE WHEEL RIMS + TIRE PACKAGES - starts at $3000 USD (or $4000 CAD) + free shipping from US but most are on backorder

Options with 18”

To be honest, Tesla does not recommend 18” tires for the Model Y. Smaller tires are always recommended for winter since you will get less bumps on rough roads and better traction.

  • 18” TESLA AERO WHEEL + WINTER TIRE PACKAGE ($2700) - You can technically do this. The tire weight should be able to sustain it but should not overload the vehicle. The wheel is rated for 750 kg load but not 800kg which is recommended for Model Y. You’ll also need to get the AERO WHEEL CAP KIT ($50) and AERO COVERS ($25) separately. Note: the brake caliper clearance is slim and may not be enough for comfort or rubs too close for comfort if not properly aligned.

  • Pirelli P Zero 275/45/18 107 XL = 27.8” = Good load, will need proper wheel width & offset to fully turn wheel/tire without rubbing

Tire Sensors

These are mandatory in the US. Not so much in Canada. But if you want the system to recognize and notify you of pressure issues, which is especially important for Tesla cars because of the vehicle weight. You will need to also purchase compatible sensors:

TIRE TOTES FOR STORAGE

Add a Kugro Tire Tote ($64) to store or carry your tires. The Tesla Shop also has a Tesla Branded Tire Tote as well but a set of 4 will come to $92.

TESLA LUG NUTS ALTERNATIVES

Alternative Tesla Lug Nuts can be bought on Amazon ($30).
